SUMMARY:
I learned that there are many animals that are endangered
because of us. We litter and kill freshwater animals. For example the Fat
Pocketbook. Threats today include population from agricultural and industrial runoff.
These chemicals and toxic metals become concentrated in the body tissues of
such filtered-feeding mussels as the Fat Pocketbook pearly mussel, eventually
poisoning to death. In the future we will probably lose 40 percent of Northwest
salmon populations in 2050.
